We are based at York Cocoa Works - 10 Castlegate, York, YO1 9RG
If you know York well we are between the Jorvik Viking Centre and the York Dungeon and just along the road from Cliffords Tower and the York Castle Museum.
With an amazing chocolate history in York there are lots of chocolate and cocoa references around the city today. Please do not mistake us for the really big chocolate factory on the outskirts of the city. They are very busy creating thousands of well known chocolate bars and are not open for visitors!
We are a completely independent business and are very proud to be making chocolate from the cocoa bean to the finished chocolate bar.
Castlegate is open for access for Blue Badge holders who are able to park directly outside where necessary
The closest car park to us is Castle Car Park or St George's Field.
The easiest way to access the city centre is via the Park and Ride at York Designer Outlet - A64/A19 junction south of York YO19 4TA and get the Line 7 bus into York and get out at the York Dungeon just behind us.
York Cocoa Works is all on one single level and is fully accessible.
We offer tables at a range of heights for all of our chocolate making activities.
Please feel free to share specific details when booking or once a booking has been made regarding any particular needs or concerns you have so we can prepare for your visit and welcome you most effectively.

Not everyone in your party needs to make a lollipop but by making a reservation it enables us to make the space available for your party.

Ordering Chocolate
We use the words cocoa and cacao to mean the same thing, one is the English word and the other the Spanish word for the same plant.
There are different versions of cocoa, for example as a tree, a pod, the fruit, the beans, the broken fragments - referred to as nibs or the de-fatted powder - that we have historically known as cocoa. It doesn't matter which word you use, what's more important to understand is the form it is in and what it has experienced. For example Beans are often raw and therefore don't yet taste of chocolate, while nibs can be raw or roasted, which is the difference in them tasting fruity, floral and bitter or nutty, and more like chocolate.
Our focus is to work with cocoa that operates outside of the commodity market in instances where the farmers are rewarded based on quality and not just volume. More than 90% of the world's cocoa is traded on the commodity market, so we believe by creating alternative trade models we can create better chocolate and reward farmers more fairly.
On average the farmers we work with receive 2 to 4 times more than they would have by trading bulk cocoa.
We work with a number of different sourcing models.
In some instances we are able to work directly with farmers. This is our ideal model as it gives great return to the farmer and best value for our customers, but it does come with a lot of up-front costs and risks that are not always easy for a small business.
In other instances we work with a trader who moves the cocoa so we can work as closely to the farmers as possible. This is a great model as the farmers can retain as much value as possible for themselves and gain from the higher prices cocoa commands in Europe.
In other instances traders go out to find great cocoa beans and communities to source from that we can buy. This is helpful as it means we can explore different varieties and regions and our traders can find other buyers to share the costs.
In other models there is a co-operative or processor that buys the beans wet, straight from the cocoa pod from the farmers so the fermentation from a region can be done together to create consistency. This is particularly helpful if farmers have a number of different varieties with different characteristics or the farmers have too little cocoa to ferment themselves.
The very short answer is no, they are not Fairtrade.
We believe the future for sustainability in cocoa and chocolate is through creating connected, shorter value chains where cocoa farmers are able to benefit from the quality of the cocoa that they share.
The Fairtrade movement has done enormous things for farmers across many supply chains, however in the world of cocoa its primary focus is in improving the operating model for bulk, commodity cocoa. This is an area that requires and deserves a lot of focus, however we want to put our energies in creating alternative, more reward and value generating models of cocoa outside of the commodity market structure.
Some of the cocoa that we work with is Fairtrade, however through the supply chain that we work with the farmers receive a higher price than they would do selling through the normal routes.
The world of cocoa is very complex and we are always learning, and new models are always appearing. Our inquisitive and exploring side seeks to continually discover and understand how to improve our buying relationships for all participants.
We had a long debate about this before opening York Cocoa Works as we think organic is an important priority in food production.
The short answer is no, our chocolates are not organic.
We debate over each ingredient that we use in our chocolate making process to find the best ingredient with the shortest supply chain and with the most sustainable impact. We realised that in some instances this meant picking local over organic, and picking tradable and direct relationships over Organic. In this case we think it is better for us to use British milk in our chocolate recipes than to source Organic milk from non-British sources.
We will always buy organic where we can, but we wanted to explore the relationships and flavour of a wide range of cocoa origins and so were unable to separate our production facility to be able to cater for both models alongside each other.
No! We do not use palm oil.
Palm oil, along with other vegetable derived fats has been used to make chocolate cheaper, by replacing the more expensive cocoa butter in confectionery items.
It is possible for a chocolate maker to use up to 5% palm oil or vegetable fats equivalent to cocoa butter and it still be called chocolate - but that's not what we're about!!!
The price of our cocoa butter has increased by 600% since early 2024 and so some makers have shifted to alternative fats. However we've made a decision to stay with real cocoa butter, which is why we sometimes have a shortage of some products or are not making white chocolate which is very intense in cocoa butter.
We have one exception which we keen trying to improve, we sometimes use ingredients that contain palm oil in the creation of non-dairy based milks and butters. We're continually looking for better solutions, but at times our cakes and truffles do contain Responsibly Sourced Palm Oil for this purpose only.
If you have any questions you can find ingredients on all of our products online and instore.
When you visit York Cocoa Works you can see our whole production process which is undertaken behind glass windows in a controlled environment.
We do not use nuts in our factory, nor have we used nuts in our equipment. However we are a small facility, we are open to the public, and we do from time to time use nut milks in our cafe, we are therefore not able to guarantee that our process is with 100% certainty a nut free environment.
We aim to be clear and transparent and not rely on alibi labelling. We want to ensure our visitors and gift recipients can make confident and informed choices.
If you are anxious about buying a gift then we would always advise that you follow recognised nut-free sites and brands.
If you are joining us on a workshop or bringing a friend with an allergy then we are always happy to be open and discuss the needs of the participant so we can welcome them to join us on any of our workshops and activities and share our chocolate with them.
Please refer to our our Guidance for how we Cater for Guests with Dietary Requirements.
Yes!
We do not use gluten containing ingredients in any of the chocolates made in our Manufactory.
Our Workshops and Chocolate Cafe both include ingredients that do contain gluten, these are clearly labelled. Please refer to our our Guidance for how we Cater for Guests with Dietary Requirements.
We have a range of chocolate bars and hot chocolate which is made with lower amounts of sugar. We also provide full nutritional contents for all of our chocolate products so the consumer can make informed choices and manage their own sugar intake.
We do not currently use sugar alternatives as consumption of large amounts of these can have a negative effect on our stomachs.
By working with fine quality cocoa beans we are able to identify cocoa that is not naturally bitter, that can be roasted at lower temperatures to keep the natural flavours in the chocolate. This allows us to create darker chocolates with less sugar and higher cocoa content that is not as bitter as many consumers are used to. We would be happy to share a sample next time you're visiting.
Absolutely!
We use different machinery in our manufactory for our dark and our milk chocolate products, keeping the chocolate separate. You can find all of our Vegan friendly chocolates listed online.

We must advise that while we are confident we are able to cater for vegan guests we can not guarantee that our chocolate is free from all traces on milk, due to our chocolate being made in the same area.
